G7 Leaders’ “Vision for Global Health”

At the 42nd G7 summit hosted by Japan in Ise-Shima on the 26th and 27th May 2016, in their statement “Vision for Global Health”, the G7 leaders committed to taking concrete actions to advance global health, highlighting that health is the foundation of economic prosperity and security. These actions include among other commitments, the reinforcement of the Global Health Architecture to strengthen responses to public health emergencies and R&D and innovation.

The G7 leaders “acknowledge the importance of ensuring mechanisms to accelerate R&D in public health emergencies, and welcome the action to prevent epidemics such as WHO Blueprint, discussions at Global Health Security Initiative and Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R).”

The G7 leaders go on to “recognise the importance of mobilizing financial resources of the relevant international organisations for strengthening preparedness for and prevention of pandemics”.

They further state their commitment to taking leadership in reinforcing response to public health emergencies which could have serious impacts on global economies. This includes a funding mechanism to ensure prompt action, a coordination arrangement and the strengthening of prevention and preparedness against outbreaks. Promoting research and development (R&D) and innovation in health is also emphasised.

GloPID-R is pleased to receive this acknowledgement and will pursue its collaborative global efforts.
